Like I said before it's best to get as close to the real thing as possible and whilst these emulators will help you out massively, there are still bugs that exist only on the actual devices that come from the vendors, Samsung, Nexus and Apple are all as guilty. All this does is link you through to a virtual machine that is emulating like I've outlined before. (If your comfortable on the command line you can also use this to do this automatically, but bear in mind that it's a big download )Īs for IOS, if you're on a mac, XCODE is free and you can run an IOS emulator that will give you almost any version of the operating system you need so you can emulate iPhones and iPads.Īndroid have an open SDK that you can use to spin up as many variations of a device that you can imagine.Īrguably there is also browser stack which personally I think, is too slow, but very good for automation testing.
The lovely people at Microsoft now provide virtual machines that will allow you to run from IE6 all the way up to IE11 on windows XP and Windows 7! To get started with these you need to install Virtual box, download the VMs you need from modern.ie and you're away. Here are some free emulation tools you can use:įor Chrome, Firefox and Opera you can simply download the browser and use it as you would normally.įor Safari, on PC I'm not sure what your options are. For testing purposes it's important to get your environment as close to the real thing as you can get. Unfortunately, browser emulation in a browser is unreliable because each browser has it's own way of rendering websites, sort of like painting an apple yellow and calling it a banana (for want of a better analogy).
